How to make a flowchart in Google Docs

    Last updated November 3, 2026

In Google Docs, open Insert, then Drawing, then New, and use the shape menu for rectangles and a diamond. For a chart you will keep editing, draw it in FlowSimp and insert the exported PNG or SVG. Docs is a document. FlowSimp is the diagram.

When is the Docs drawing enough?

A five-shape chart that will not change can live in a Doc. The drawing opens in a dialog, you place shapes, and you save it back into the paragraph. Reviewers who already live in that Doc see the picture without another login.

The limit shows up when someone asks for a second path. The dialog is small, arrows do not stay attached the way a diagram tool's arrows do, and there is no undo history that belongs to the chart rather than the Doc.

How do you keep the chart editable?

Draw the flowchart in FlowSimp, export PNG or SVG, and use Insert, Image in the Doc. The Doc holds the picture the reader sees. The editable board stays in the browser, or on an optional Google sign-in if you want it on an account.

FlowSimp is completely free to use — no sign-up required. The Doc does not need to be the editor. It only needs to show the current picture.

What should you not paste in?

Do not paste a screenshot of a half-finished chart and call it the process. Write the steps as a short list first. A question mark in that list is a diamond. If you cannot say the question, you are not ready for the shape menu.

The how-to guide covers that list. The symbols guide says which shapes FlowSimp actually has: rectangle, rounded rectangle, diamond, and circle.

    What are the steps?

    1. Open a drawing. In the Doc, choose Insert, Drawing, New. The drawing is a canvas inside the page, not the page itself.
    2. Place the shapes. Use the shape menu. A step is a rectangle. A question is a diamond. Do not use a rectangle for a question.
    3. Connect them. Use the arrow tool between shapes. Label both answers that leave a diamond.
    4. Save or switch. Save and close to drop the drawing into the Doc. If you outgrow the canvas, export a PNG from FlowSimp and insert that image instead.
